The hot and humid summer passed. In fall, we have local festivals (matsuri) here and there. Today I went to Onshirin-matsuri. (What is "Onshirin"? Onshirin (恩賜林) is a forest site given by the Emperor of Japan. A hundred years ago, this area was severely damaged by some typhoons and the Emperor decided to give us a part of national forest. Currently, Onshirin associations are maintain the site.)

Today's festival was held at Onshirin garden in Fujiyoshida city. This event is for people to become more familiar with wood and forest. My bosses opened a booth of woodwork. My friend and I enjoyed watching chain-saw curving, trying woodwork, and having some foods (udon, yakisoba, yakitori, okonomiyaki, popcorn, etc).

Saruhashi (Monkey Bridge)

Legend has it that this bridge was built imitating the scene of some monkeys were in line like a bridge across the Katsura river. That's why it's called "Saru (=monkey)-hashi (=bridge)". It is one of Three Odd Bridges in Japan. This place is also famous for it's beautiful colored leaves in Autumn.

I went there and crossd over. The bridge is made of Japanese cypress, so it smelled very nice.

About Saruhashi (Japanese)

And if you have a chance to visit there, try "Atsuyaki senbei (thick cracker)". It is tooooo hard to crack! Please don't bite it off unless you have strong teeth!

Last Wednesday, I went to a udon-noodle shop with my co-workers. While we were eating very hard udon, which is now getting popular as "Yoshida-no-udon", very unique clothing men were coming inside the shop.... They are called Yamabushi or Shugenja. Maybe they climbed Mt. Fuji the day before and stopped for lunch on their way home.... Even in Japan we don't see such people often, so we were very excited!

Former Fujiyoshida station will change its name to "Fuji-san (Mt.Fuji) station". Why? Maybe Fujikyuko Co., Ltd. assumes that it will attract more people than ever. Press release is here.

Tozan bus for the 5th station of Mt. Fuji will serve from this station.

In my opinion, to change historical (Fujiyoshida sta. opened in 1929) name must be considered carefully. About 30 years ago, Kurechi (暮地) sta. in Fujikyuko-line changed to Kotobuki (寿) sta. It's because the caracter 暮地 resembles 墓地 (cemetery). (BTW, 寿　means "celebration", very opposite!) I bought a memorial ticket of 寿駅 then. But this time..... maybe I won't.

BTW, I often use this station building, because 無印良品 MUJI shop is in there. And the tourist information center in this station is very informative. If you get off the train at Fuji-san station, please visit there.

I don't know where you could buy a ticket for Fujikyuko-line other than Fujikyuko-line stations.

After I wrote this, I learned how to buy Fujikyuko-line ticket outside Fujikyuko area. You can buy one at JR Ticket Offices (midori-no-madoguchi みどりの窓口), JR Travel Service Center (View Plaza びゅうプラザ), or from the reserved-ticket vending machines (not from the regular green ones) from one month before your ride. JR-EAST

However, be careful if you transfer from JR to Fujikyuko-line at Otsuki station.

Platform #1 & #2 are for Fujikyuko-line. #3, #4 & #5 are for JR. When you get off at Otsuki, cross the bridge from #4 & #5, then turn right and down to the Fujikyuko-line ticket gate. If you don't have Fujikyuko-line ticket, go through the left gate and buy one from a vending machine. Fujikyuko-line allows neither Suica nor PASMO. Mostly there are only few minutes to transfer, but stay calm and don't panic!

After karaoke on 17th, I got a cold....high fever, running nose, bad cough, etc. I have been in a bed for a week so I had to cancel my flight to Bangkok... (+_+)　

Anyway, Mt. Fuji climbing season starts in a few days.

I have tried many times to write something about the 311 disaster. I still cannot believe what happened, though. Now I can say is "we are alive".

I went to "Fuji Cemetery" last week. It is located in Gotemba area in Shizuoka pref. It's well known about its beautiful gardens, which are very well maintained. When I went there, azaleas were almost in full bloom. Mt. Fuji was seen from there, but I think.... I know most Shizuoka people have counter opinion.... the shape of Mt. Fuji seen from Yamanashi-side is more beautiful!

I had a typical New Year's day, had osechi-ryori (traditional New Year's food), watched funny TV programs, played with my pet, ate half of my cake (it estimates about 2,000kcal! I have to run around Mt.Fuji to burn calories! hahaha...),etc...

I think many people want to climb Mt. Fuji on New Year's day. You must be so excited if you could see the sunrise from the top. But on the other hand, you must be careful when you tread on the icy surface of Mt. Fuji.

46 y/o Japanese man slipped from the top to the 8.5 station of Mt. Fuji today. He was carried to the hospital but is unconcious. I hope he will come back to life.

My first "Strawberry Cake"

It is the last day of this year....
I made a lot of sweets around this year.
And I wanted to close this year with my first "Strawberry Cake".
I know I'm no good at decorating cakes.... but, I'm sure it's delicious!

However, I was so surprised that this type of cake contains a LOT OF SUGAR in it! 100g for sponge cake, 150g for syrup, and 30g for fresh cream!!! Mmmmmmm..... better not to eat???

A bass player for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra died on Mt. Fuji yesterday. He started to climb with another Austrian from Yoshida trail in Yamanashi pref. and slipped around the 9th station of Subashiri trail, without any crampons, police said. He was visiting Japan for the performance tour from Nov. 1st to 10th, but there was no concert yesterday.

I understand that you want to climb Mt. Fuji when you visit Japan. But please don't do that out of season....

Then, why is it still open in snowy season? I have straggled with that matter since I worked at a tourist information center. I was frequently asked by tourists from overseas, mostly from Western countries though, about climbing Mt. Fuji in winter. Many of them took a risk even if I begged not to do that. And some of them wrote success stories on their blog after climbing. It makes people think climbing Mt. Fuji in winter is as if " fun and easy"....

Do you think climbing Mt. Fuji in winter should be banned by law or something?

Asumi Lotus Lake　（明見湖・蓮池）

Asumi Lotus Lake (not so big, but it's considered as one of fuji "eight" lakes... ) is located in Asumi area in Fujiyoshida-city. I have never seen so many lotus flowers at one time. We can enjoy this beautiful scenery until 20th of August this year. According to a man who has long been taking care of this lake, his ancestor "Uhei Hirose" transplanted some of them about 200 years ago. It's the origin of this lotus lake, they said. Next time I want to go there before dawn to hear the sound of flower blooming.

A 71 y/o Japanese male climbed Mt. Fuji with his elder brother on 28th. He stayed at a mountain hut on Yoshida-trail 8th station. He restarted to climb next morning and fell on the ground after reaching the summit. He is said to be an experienced climber. ( He has been climbed over 50 years.) At that time, the weather of summit was windy & rainy.

Another 71 y/o Japanese male joining a climbing tour was dead around the 8th station today. More detail later.

A young black bear emerged at Hotel Highland Resort area today.
He climbed up on a tree near the chapel and has been staying there.
He is said to be the one who released around Misaka mountain area (Mt.Mitsutoge) after the capture at Mt. Tenjo in Fujikawaguchiko town.
Everyone has a chance to meet him around Mt. Fuji.
He might not be harmful, but be careful!

P.S. After 13 hours stay, he was captured this morning and was released around the 3rd stn. of Mt. Fuji! (Jul.28th)

The 12th Heritage Music Festival took place at Stella Theater in Kawaguchiko town. Being impressed by "Mt. Fuji Charter （富士山憲章）" at the Herb Festival in Kawaguchiko, local musicians have been holding this charity concert since 1999.

A 22 y/o Japanese man happend to climb Mt. Fuji along Fujinomiya trail yesterday. He went there empty-handed, was wearing a shirt, jeans, and sneakers. He reached the 9th station but lost his way, because he had no lights. Then called the police. Six members of mountain rescue went there to help him. He was sheltered at the 6th station.

I enjoyed soba (buckwheat noodle) yesterday. This restaurant is in Kofu city, a bit far from Fuji Five Lakes area though. As I am a big eater, I gobbled up this set meal (1,800yen) in a few minutes. It includes tempra, sashimi, chicken guts coated with sweet soy sauce (This dish is one of the Yamanashi's local specialties. Usually it is served at soba noodle restaurants in Yamanashi.), soba noodle, steamed soba & rice, and a slice of cantaloupe melon.

This restaurant first started to serve this menu about 60 years ago. Now it's getting popular and you can eat at most of any soba noodle restaurants in Yamanashi. Why don't you try this "tori-motsu-ni" when you come here?

Opening Ceremony for climbing Mt. Fuji

Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine holds an opening ceremony at 10am of July 1st every year. After this, Sendatsu （先達=practitioners of Fujiko）move to Otsuka-yama（大塚丘）to have another ceremony. Being late to see it, I went to Umagaeshi（馬返し）to see the 3rd ceremony of today.

After a short pray for a small shrine, they sit just before the torii-gate on the entrance of the Old Yoshida trail. Putting a mound of salt on the ground, a man spreads some incense sticks on it and set a bottle of sake and two candles around it. A man ignites the incense. They are chanting a special sutra. A piece of paper is burned on the fire. It soars into the sky. After the long chant, the fire is extinguished. Mixed salt and ashes are wraped in tenugui (Japanese towel). A man presses on our back with this in order. It means 無病息災(sound health).

There were three foreign climbers. They seemed to enjoy this ceremony.

I received an email from France about 3 months ago. The sender is interested in Mt. Fuji, especially in climbing Mt. Fuji in traditional style, "Fujiko（富士講）". He studied it in his youth and has long wanted to join it someday.

Originally climbing Mt. Fuji was not a reisure, but a religion. People believed that Mt. Fuji could purify themselves if you climb it. So, many people walked to here from every region. This ceremony called "Fujiko （富士講）". It flourished in Edo era (1603-1868). They say that there were almost 800 groups in its peak, and most of those were in Kanto region.

Fujiyoshida city revived this ceremony. Named "Let's walk to Mt. Fuji (富士まで歩る講）" starts at Nihonbashi in Tokyo and ends at Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine in Fujiyoshida. 120km- walk in 4 days! WOW! I told the sender about this event. Then he applied it and was accepted!

The party included Mr. Regnier from France came to my city yesterday. I went to cheer him up. And today, I joined the party for awhile. My walking distance was only 5km or so, but I could enjoy a feeling of Fujiko.

I am very happy to meet Mr. Regnier. And I thank the staff members of "Let's walk to Mt. Fuji" for being welcomed me.

I wish Mr. Regnier and his wife will have a happy Mt. Fuji climbing tomorrow!

A 52 y/o American doctor from D.C. slipped from the 7th station of Mt. Fuji around 9pm of June 12th. He was rescued by other foreign climbers and carried to a hosp. by a helicopter. He complained of his back and right shoulder pain but is conscious, is not life-threatning injured.

Fujiyoshida police said that he came here for visiting with his family and started to climb in the early morining on that day with his son and daughter, and her friend. They wore light cloths, just for a hiking, and didn't submit a climbing schedule to the police.

Mt. Fuji had a new snow a few days before their climbing.

Again, please do not climb Mt. Fuji out of climbing season, PLEASE!

Japanese "Golden week " is coming to an end. Eventhough it's not the official climbing season of Mt. Fuji yet, some people tried to scale the highest peak of Japan during this holiday season.

A 44 y/o woman from Tokyo was found died at Tsubakuro-sawa near the 7th station of Mt. Fuji yesterday. Hidetaka Arai, 35 y/o from Nagoya, and Yoshiji Sugiyama, 70 y/o from Saitama, slipped down around the 8th station and were severly injured.

The owner of Sato-goya at the 5th station of Yoshida trail says that the weather of yesterday was clear, but the surface around the summit was very icy due to the rain of April 30th.

A helicopter was taking off close by me when I was at a bakery in Kawaguchiko town yesterday. The helicopter seemed to have carried one of them from Mt. Fuji.

On April 13th, a 49-y/o-man started to climb Mt. Fuji from Gotemba Taro-bo. He was going to descend the next day. He didn't show up until 16th so his wife requested the police to search for him. His body was found near Gotemba 6th station. His COD was brain contusion.

An experienced climber from Saitama 200m slipped down by the strong wind at the 8th station on April 9th. He was frostbitten and broke his sidebone. Got back to Sato-goya on the 5th station in his own 2 days later. Local police couldn't believe that he was alive under the severe circumstance.
